1. Congratulations on getting the state rank in the HSC examinations. Was it a surprise when it came or were you expecting it any way?
I was expecting only good marks in my examination. I was very confident that I will come first in my school. When I heard that I've got state II, it was a complete surprise to me.

2. Many schools and students start their preparation for the twelfth standard examinations while in the 11th standard itself. When did you start your preparations for the 12th standard public examinations?
In our school, 12th standard portions have been completed in the month of May. From June, we had a series of examinations. Thus I have started my preparations from June.

3. Was the teaching and materials provided by the school sufficient for your preparations or did you take any special coaching for any of the subjects?
Yes the teaching and materials provided in our school was sufficient for my preparations. I did not take up any special coaching.

4. For how many hours per day did you study?
Our school hours are from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm. In home, I used to revise the portions which I have studied for about an hour.

5. How was your typical school working day like? How would you allot time for each of your work?
Our school pattern was to study one subject for 2 days and to write an exam on the third day. As I can grasp fast, I used to read for 1.5 days and revise my lessons for 0.5 day.

6. How was your typical school holiday (weekend etc) like? How would you allot time for each of your work?
I am sorry to say that our school functioned on all saturdays and sundays. Hence I have to work monotonously on all weekends as my school days.

7. Did you approach preparation for each of the subject (Language, English, Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Biology/Computer Science) differently or was your approach the same to each of the subject?
I had different methods of preparation for each of the subjects. I feel that each subject has to be read by its own method so that its concepts remain in our minds forever.

8. If your approach to each of the subjects were different, how did you approach the preparation for -
a. Language (Tamil) Paper

In Language paper, presentation, grammar, style play a major role. Hence I used to take up many model examinations. In unit tests, I used to complete my portion thoroughly. During my 50% examinations, full revision tests, I have planned and executed my own special ways of answering each question. According to me, if we have a flair for the language, everything will surely turn out with success. Spelling mistakes have to be completely avoided.

b. English Paper

By taking two public exam question papers for English I and II, I started preparing for my English exam. Sectionwise, the preparation was made. Textual exercises and examples which were based on government pattern are to be given full priority. Essay answers are to be written on our own and it must be checked by the teacher before writing in the board exam. In Paper I, special care has to be given for synonyms, antonyms and poetry answers while in second paper logical arrangement should be given utmost care.

c. Physics Paper

In Physics, each and every topic has to be understood clearly well. After completing each chapter, a list of formulae, SI units and standard values given in chapter has to be written in a paper and stuck in the book. This aids quicker revision. Statements regarding proportionalities has to be remembered thoroughly well. Diagram practice has to be taken separately. Derivations should be written and practised.

d. Chemistry Paper

As state board chemistry consists of 22 lessons, it is not possible for all the students to reach each and every line in the book. Instead a question bank can be prepared for the lessons consisting of a list of 3 mark and 5 mark questions so that if we cover those questions, the entire lesson has been covered. As there will be 20 objectives from the text book collection, they have to be read seriously.

e. Mathematics Paper

This is my favourite subject. I consider MATHS as one which Makes Any Thing as High as Sky. Many students by heart the sums given in their text book. This is a very bad habit and it has to be completely eradicated. Before doing a sum, its methodology has to be understood and it should be applied for other sums in the exercise. Neat figures with full representation is required for the respective sums. While doing sums, full concentration is required and there must not be any diversion.

f. Computer Science Paper

This is the easiest of all subjects. In Volume I, in a single tabular column, 8 lessons could be read. It must contain the topics: Action, Shortcut keys, Menu, Icons, Dialog box name, tabs and other buttons. Regarding Volume II, if programs are felt difficult, a list of 13 programs alone will be enough for board exams. Each and every word is important for objective. Many Q. papers are to be solved for this purpose.

9. How important are handwriting and learning to write speedily in the examinations? Is there anything that a student can do to improve these two aspects?
Handwriting plays a vital role only in language and English. Writing speedily helps us to save time which could be used effectively for checking our answer scripts. Both these can be improved only by continuous practice.

10. Are there any strict Dos and Donts that you would recommend a student preparing for his or her twelfth standard examinations to adhere to?
Dos

-> Eat healthy food and drink plenty of water
-> Be attentive in the classroom especially when the teacher is taking class
-> Clarify your doubts then and there

Donts

-> Avoid taking food from hotels. Avoid junk (fast) food
-> Sleep atleast for six hours in the night
-> Never neglect your teacher's advice
-> Never forget to pray God
-> Avoid taking leave (from school)
-> Never postpone your work

11. Did your school identify you as a prospective state rank holder early and give any special attention and coaching? How important is the choice of a school in achieving high marks in the examinations?
Our school management identified a set of 15 as toppers and gave special coaching to all the 15 of us. We were made to answer different kinds of question papers even without choice. Special classes were held even till 8:00pm. Teachers from other schools were called to give us some valuable tips.

12. What was the role of your parents and family in your preparations for your public examinations?
My family has three members including me. My mother gives me full freedom to read my lessons whenever I wish. If any teacher scolds me in school for getting low marks, it is my mother who consoles me at home and gives me confidence. She never scolds me when I get low marks also. As I was pressurised in school, home was the place where I could relax well.

13. How did you learn about your achieving the state rank in the examinations? What was your reaction when you first heard it?
My friend called me through phone by 8:30 am and told me that I have secured State II rank. I asked her repeatedly whether she is joking or not. When I switched on the TV and viewed my name in the flash news, I was really surprised.

14. Did you have any time to play any sport, pursue any hobby during your preparation for the public examination?
I always have the habit of listening to songs when I am doing maths or when I am tired. Thus, hobby was a part of my preparation.

15. Your life must have changed after achieving the state rank. You must be busy receiving lot of congratulatory messages, awards, recognitions etc. Could you tell your experience since the results were released?
On the day of the result, ie. May 14, 2009, I was called to collectorate office, Krishnagiri to meet our District Collector from Hosur. I reached there by 10:30 am. I gave many interviews to TV channels, newspapers, All India Radio, Suryan FM etc.

The first gift I received from the AIM Institute who have conducted a model public examination to me. They gave a book called 'Vedic Mathematics'. By 3:30, the Collector gave me a cash prize of Rs.3000. That evening the manager of Indian Bank gave me two valuable boooks "You can win" and "Manorama Year Book".

The next day I was felicitated by Manjunatha Industries, Hosur by a cash prize of Rs.5000/-

On 25-5-2009, I was called by our Chief Minister and was given a cash prize of Rs.30,000 and scholarship for my future studies.

16. Are there any special people you would like to thank for your achievement?
I would like to thank in general my family, my school teachers and my principal who are responsible for this achievement. Specially, I would like to thank Mrs.Seethalakhsmi, Mrs.Suma who gave me confidence when I had drop downs.

It is also my father and the Almighty who have showered their blessings throughout my life.

17. Tell us about your family.
My father has expired five years ago. He was working in LIC as a Branch Manager. My mother's name is M.Rama and she works in State Bank of India as a Senior Assistant. I have a younger brother S.Vivek who is studying VIII standard right now.

18. What course have you chosen to pursue after your twelfth standard?
I always had an ambition to study in College of Engineering, Guindy. I will choose B.E. (ECE) as my course.

19. Finally, what is your advise to the students who would be taking their public examinations shortly?
Learn the habit of helping your friends who have doubts in their studies. When you teach others, naturally you become strong in the concepts.
