1. Congratulations on getting the state rank in the HSC examinations. Was it a surprise when it came or were you expecting it any way?
I expected to get a very good score, but State "First" is only God's grace

2. Many schools and students start their preparation for the twelfth standard examinations while in the 11th standard itself. When did you start your preparations for the 12th standard public examinations?
I started the preparation at the starting of twelfth standard. I mainly concentrated on 11th portion while in 11th standard

3. Was the teaching and materials provided by the school sufficient for your preparations or did you take any special coaching for any of the subjects?
I didn't take any special coaching. Working on a regular basis, understanding concepts rather than mugging were the keys to success. But I attended classes for IIT-JEE, which helped me a lot.

4. For how many hours per day did you study?
About 5-6 hours

5. How was your typical school working day like? How would you allot time for each of your work?
The time allotted would vary according to the work I had.

6. How was your typical school holiday (weekend etc) like? How would you allot time for each of your work?
No specific time schedule. It depends on the work. Usually during holdays. I used to study for about 8-10 hours.

7. Did you approach preparation for each of the subject (Language, English, Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Biology/Computer Science) differently or was your approach the same to each of the subject?
Each subject is equally important. I spent more time on major subjects than on English and Language. For Biology, Practising diagrams is important. For Physics and Chemistry, solving problems was helpful. Reading by writing was very helpful for all subjects.

8. How important are handwriting and learning to write speedily in the examinations? Is there anything that a student can do to improve these two aspects?
Handwriting is very important for English and Language papers. Writing speedily is the foremost thing to finish major subject papers. Practice makes a man perfect. Practice only helps to improve these.

9. Are there any strict Dos and Donts that you would recommend a student preparing for his or her twelfth standard examinations to adhere to?
Strict Dos and Donts are to be learnt from teachers. Following teachers' advice is the main thing. According to me, there are no strict Dos and Donts. Hardwork is the key to success. Be sincere towards work and yourself. Maintaining the health also plays a great role.
10. How did you prepare for your entrance examinations? How was it different from your preparation for the public examinations? When did you begin your entrance exam preparations? Is there any institute or material that you would recommend for this?
Both for Tamil Nadu entrance and Public examinations, the portion is the same. As entrance exam is objective type (oriented), the 'key words' are more important. Understanding the concept, rather than mugging, made it easier for me. Actually entrance exam preparation begins with the twelfth preparation itself. In Entrance exam, they concentrate more on problems rather than theory. I concentrated mainly on problems in the last two months. There are many good institutions and books for guidance. They are really helpful. They give shortcuts which are useful for solving problems in a short time as time factor is the major criteria in entrance exams.

11. Did your school identify you as a prospective state rank holder early and give any special attention and coaching? How important is the choice of a school in achieving high marks in the examinations?
I used to top the class in my school examinations. So my teachers used to encourage me a lot. The choice of school is not so important. By working hard and practising everyday, anyone can achieve high marks in the examinations.

12. What was the role of your parents and family in your preparations for your public examinations?
My parents and my family supported me very much. My parents helped me a lot in achieving this. They provided a conducive environment for studying.

13. How did you learn about your achieving the state rank in the examinations? What was your reaction when you first heard it?
I just worked hard and I achieved the state rank. I was very much excited when I heard the news. I was in an ecstatic moment.

14. Did you have any time to play any sport, pursue any hobby during your preparation for the public examination?
I used to spend some time listening to music to relax myself. In the last few months, I didn't have much time to play any sport. Listening to songs was my only hobby then.

15. Your life must have changed after achieving the state rank. You must be busy receiving lot of congratulatory messages, awards, recognitions etc. Could you tell your experience since the results were released?
After achieving the state rank, I received a lot of congragulatory messages from my relatives and friends. I was given many awards in whcih the awards given by the Chief Minister inspired me a lot to achieve many more feats in my life.

16. Are there any special people you would like to thank for your achievement?
First of all, I want to thank God for making me to get the first rank in the state in Plus Two examinations. Then I want to thank my parents, teachers and my school Principal for helping me to achieve this.

17. Tell us about your family.
My father is K.S. Vasudevan, Retd. Additional Manager, Madras Fertilizers Ltd; Mother V.Bhooma is working in Indian Bank; Sister V.Gayatri is working for a software company [Editor's Note: She herself was State 2nd Rank Holder in the Plus Two examinations in 1999]

18. What course have you chosen to pursue after your twelfth standard?
I have chosen M.B.B.S

19. Finally, what is your advise to the students who would be taking their public examinations shortly?
Hard work on a regular basis and practising by writing are very important. Start your preparation from day one and manage your time judicially. You will definitely succeed.
