1. Congratulations on getting the state rank in the HSC examinations. Was it a surprise when it came
or were you expecting it any way?
Thanks for your congratulations. I expected to become a topper in HSC examination. I studied from the beginning to get state rank. Consequently I got State Second. I feel very happy.
2. Many schools and students start their preparation for the twelfth standard examinations while in
the 11th standard itself. When did you start your preparations for the 12th standard public examinations?
12th standard preparations started from the middle of the 11th standard. But my intense preparations started after 11th examination.
3. Was the teaching and materials provided by the school sufficient for your preparations or did you
take any special coaching for any of the subjects?
Yes, of course. They way of teaching by my teachers and the materials provided by the school management was sufficient and helped me a lot to understand the facts to their core. I didn’t take any special coaching. The method of coaching in my school itself is very special.
4. For how many hours per day did you study?
I usually woke up at 5:00 am and go to bed at 11:30 pm after my homeworks.
5. How was your typical school working day like? How would you allot time for each of your
work?
The school management itself allots time equally for all subjects. I would split that time for each topic based on the nature of the topic whether hard or easy.
6. How was your typical school holiday (weekend etc) like? How would you allot time for each of your
work?
Sunday is holiday. But they would keep special class for half a day. I would take rest in the afternoons. Then I would go on with my works in the evenings.
7. Did you approach preparation for each of the subject (Language, English, Physics, Chemistry,
Maths, Biology/Computer Science) differently or was your approach the same to each of the subject?
I had the same view over all the subjects. Each and every subject is important for scoring the highest total. But my preparation of each subject depends upon my strength over the subject. Special attention will be given over the hard and weaker areas in every subject.
8. If your approach to each of the subjects were different, how did you approach the preparation for
-
a. Language (Tamil) Paper
Marks in language paper (Tamil) depends upon neatness and presentation. One can score high marks if he presents his preparation without any mistakes, scratches and scribblings. My Tamil teacher Mr.M.Prakasam taught these tips and helped a lot to avoid the above things. I avoided the above by frequent tests conducted by our school management. Those tests helped me to improve my presentation and handwriting. b. English Paper In case of English, I gave special attention to score full marks in objective type questions and two marks and I succeeded in it. The next deciding factor is the standard of prose, supplementary and general essays. I collected many quotes from several books to be added under the appropriate subtitles in essays. My English teacher Mr.B.Amar Singh gave several one word materials for us to work out. He also helped me to improve the usage of words (vocabulary) with each monthly test. c. Physics Paper I had an aim to get Centum in all the four (Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Biology) third part subjects. Its easy to get Centum in Physics if one understands every concept and then read it. I never memorized the subject. I just keep the key words in my mind. I always prefer derivative questions to theory questions. Its easy to finish the exam earlier and easy to verify while choosing derivative questions. Mr.V.Selva Kumar, my Physics teacher provided many 1 mark materials to be worked out by us. Special attention towards problems and one words made me to score Centum in Physics. d. Chemistry Paper Again my intention to score Centum helped to score the maximum. I gave primary attention towards equations and formulas. I select maximum questions from organic Chemistry which helps for quicker completion and verification. Understanding the equations and balancing them and the subject is better than memorizing. Mr. S.Karuppiah Sriram, my Chemistry teacher conducted many class tests which helped me to secure Centum. In case of compulsory question (2 out of 4), its better to prepare for attending all the 4 than leaving 2 without preparation. e. Mathematics Paper Maths is the easiest of the 4 subjects. I would work out all the sums without leaving any sum. Its better to learn the sums model-wise. Frequent tests conducted by my Maths teacher Mr.P.Chakravarthy (Principal) helped me to secure Centum. Its good to know how to solve the one word questions than to memorise them. I used to check the solution for each and every problem by working it out in the reverse manner. Avoiding carelessness takes us towards Centum. f. Biology Paper In the beginning, I felt Biology especially Zoology tough. But that feeling disappeared by frequent revisions and tests conducted by my Biology teachers (Botony - Mr.R.Saravana Kumar [Vice-Principal]; Zoology - Mr.G.Kalaimani). I always revise the key points rather than every word. I allotted extra time for Zoology than Botony. Its necessary to learn the entire book to secure full marks in one words. I always choose shorter questions. Pointwise questions and flow charts. 9. How important are handwriting and learning to write speedily in the examinations? Is there
anything that a student can do to improve these two aspects?
Regarding language and English, handwriting plays a vital role while in other 4, it goes to time management. One can improve these two aspects by frequent tests and practice. It is difficult to change handwriting at this stage but one can do the best to mend and slightly modify his handwriting.
10. Are there any strict Dos and Donts that you would recommend a student preparing for his or her twelfth standard examinations to adhere to?
While preparing for exams, one must have his/her concentration only towards studies. One must understand the facts before preparation. It is a must to approach teachers if anything is not clear. One should never memorise any subject. He/she should never get distracted towards anything during preparations.
One must be confident and have a positive thought. One must not give up one’s hope at any moment. One should develop self confidence. At the same time, over confidence must be avoided 11. Did your school identify you as a prospective state rank holder early and give any special attention and coaching? How important is the choice of a school in achieving high marks in the examinations?
Yes, my school identified some of the students as rank holders. I was one of them. They gave equal attention to all. But they made to have an aim to achieve the state rank. Every time they encourage me that I can do.
The attitude of a student and the choice of a better school is vital for scoring high marks in the exams. The ability and confidence of a student is more important for securing high marks. 12. What was the role of your parents and family in your preparations for your public examinations?
My parents are really a gift for me. They encouraged me a lot. They boosted me when I made any mistakes in the school examinations. They banned me from watching TV and they too didn’t watch TV for three years. My mom would stay awake with me in nights till I complete my works. I lost a high rank in Matric exam. My father made me realize that I must compensate that loss in 12th exam. My sister and all my family members were too supporting me.
13. How did you learn about your achieving the state rank in the examinations? What was your reaction when you first heard it?
My parents and teachers made me realize that I will surely get State rank. I was informed by my teachers that I have achieved. I was really excited and too happy. I thanked God, parents and my teachers. All my family members wished me on that splendid day.
14. Did you have any time to play any sport, pursue any hobby during your preparation for the public examination?
We spent our time for playing and other hobbies during the early days of our 12th. But for the last three months our concentration was focused only on studies.
15. Your life must have changed after achieving the state rank. You must be busy receiving lot of congratulatory messages, awards, recognitions etc. Could you tell your experience since the results were released?
Its true. I was awarded a shield and a sliver medal by our district collector Mrs.Shanmugam IAS. Then I was honoured by Coimbatore Mayor, IOB, SBI and TNEB. I am really very happy and proud of getting the State Rank.
16. Are there any special people you would like to thank for your achievement?
I would like to convey my thanks to my parents, sister, all my teachers, other school staff, family members and God. I would like to thank specially my school correspondent Mr.Chandrasekaran. He is a great treasure for my school and the students.
17. Tell us about your family.
My father Mr.C.R.Manoharan is an Assistant Engineer in TNEB. He completed his BE in Anna University. My mother Mrs. M. Santha, B.A. Degree holder is a home maker. My sister M.Yogambiga is doing her 10th standard.
18. What course have you chosen to pursue after your twelfth standard?
I have chosen MBBS. Its my aim to come out as a doctor and help the poor with free medications.
19. Finally, what is your advise to the students who would be taking their public examinations shortly?
(19) I request the students to have a positive approach and self confidence in every step. One must have one’s concentration only on studies while preparing for public examination. Refreshment is very important while studying for long time. Its important to have a 10 minutes break after every one hour of study. Meditation surely provides that refreshment. Its good to read the syllabus as and when they are taught. TV must be avoided strictly. Health must be cared. 6 hours deep sleep per day. Avoiding oil foods in the mornings, taking fruits especially Apple can keep our body in good condition. One must understand the concept and should not memorise them. One must be clear and thorough with all concepts to score full marks (especially in one words) in the four subjects. Tension is the first enemy. When any one word is unknown, one shouldn’t get tensed. If one takes it without tension, the correct answer will definitely strike in the mind. Overconfidence should be avoided.
Interest + hard work + concentration = Success |
