or were you expecting it any way?
As I secured II rank in the 10th examination, I was more expecting it. But when I couldn't see my name in
I and II ranks, tears filled my eyes. When I came to know that I had secured III place, I experienced a mixed
feeling of surprise, happiness and excitement.
2. Many schools and students start their preparation for the twelfth standard examinations while in
the 11th standard itself. When did you start your preparations for the 12th standard public examinations?
I had no more preparations for the 12th standard until the commencement of 11th standard public exams. After my
11th stardard annual exams in March 2008, we had summer classes for 10 days - just for introducing the chapters.
Then we had regular classes only in June 2008. It is important to say that I read new chapters during March,
April and May months (holidays).
3. Was the teaching and materials provided by the school sufficient for your preparations or did you
take any special coaching for any of the subjects?
The teaching was perfectly provided by our school. But the coaching materials were not sufficient. So I had my
coaching by individual means via the collected model question papers.
4. For how many hours per day did you study?
12 hour during holidays and 4-5 hours during working days (at home)
5. How was your typical school working day like? How would you allot time for each of your
work?
Our school begins at 8:30 am and ends at 5:30 pm for 10th and 12th students. I usually allot one hour for each
subject except language papers which were concentrated during holidays.
6. How was your typical school holiday (weekend etc) like? How would you allot time for each of your
work?
My typical school holiday (Sunday only, other holidays had classes mostly) begins at 6:00 am and ends at 10:00 pm.
I allotted more time for Tamil and English. And one hour for each subject which was useful for the week's review.
7. Did you approach preparation for each of the subject (Language, English, Physics, Chemistry,
Maths, Biology/Computer Science) differently or was your approach the same to each of the subject?
My approach was different for language paper and main subjects.
8. If your approach to each of the subjects were different, how did you approach the preparation for
-
a. Language (Tamil) Paper
My preparation for the language paper (Tamil) began in April 2008 itself. I studied poems and prepared supplementary essays (only few) by my own interest. As I was familiar with the grammar even in my high school classes, it did not need much time for those things. I concentrated much on the presentation as it was easy to study. I allotted weekends for studying Tamil. I usually depend on books and no more guides. b. English Paper The pattern for I and II papers wer very simple and easy to score more. Unfortunately, I got only 187. It gave me much surprise as I worked hard for preparing English essays. Study hour in school for English and the weekends were the allotted timings. I took more time via dictionaries, other books, quote references, many grammar items, model test papers to study English. For Language and English, I had the habit of continuous reading only and not studying which gave me interest to do that. c. Physics Paper I found somewhat difficult with Physics because I have the capability to memorise only by understanding. My teachers recommended me to memorise words and write the same in the test paper. Also, the last chapter was finished urgently. By other means, it was simple. I had the habit of solving problems by my own means. If I had any doubt in problems and text materials, I consult only my teachers not guides. Everyday, I had one hour (mini) studying and weekend revision. Before studying, I would develop the confidence. I took much care to draw the circuit diagrams and read the entire text word by word continuously without any break. I worked out many test papers. d. Chemistry Paper I always lose marks only in Chemistry in Std. XI. So, I concentrated more from my beginning. This subject did not give me much time to plan. Because, I got a wonderful teacher whose plannings were perfect and I followed them strictly. I wasted not even a time while studying. Also, I worked out more test papers. I prepared own questions and solved problems for my complete understanding. It practised me to write fastly. e. Mathematics Paper Once I got very less marks in a class test conducted in Standard XII which inspired me to study Maths regularly. Example problems were solved by my teacher and she instructed us to solve the exercise problems by our own means. Hence it did not find much difficult to study. From January 2009, I began to solve more and more test papers. Always, I left some careless mistakes. So, writing these papers gave me much chance to correct them. It was routine to have all the subjects daily. It also help me to finish my exam 1/2 hour before time. I also concentrated more on one word question. f. Biology Paper I felt the same difficulty in Biology as with Physics paper. So I gave more importance to it and allotted more time. I revised it again and again. I would take notes while listening which helped me a lot to study. Then I read the text again and again until it familiarises with me. I solved many more test papers. The six days before our Biology Exam was very helpful to score centum. 9. How important are handwriting and learning to write speedily in the examinations? Is there
anything that a student can do to improve these two aspects?
It is an aspect our English teacher would often say that our handwriting does not need to be good, but be neat and
eligible. We should take care to present what we studied in the exam paper. At the same time, 3 hours time is
somewhat tight for Tamil II, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. So, a good and continous writing is needed which comes
by writing more test papers.
10. Are there any strict Dos and Donts that you would recommend a student preparing for his or her twelfth standard examinations to adhere to?
Dos
* Allot atleast 15 minutes morning and night to pray which must be silent and deep * Yogas or any regular exercises or play games in evenings to relax yourself * Do your homework and finish the lessons that day itself * Motivate yourself with cheerful quotes of great leaders and scientists Donts * Don't watch TV serials, cricket games, video or computer games often which would strain our eyes and not help to feel relaxed * Don't chat with others while teaching and be attentive * Don't use the term tomorrow, do it today * Don't memorise simply. Do understand the text 11. Did your school identify you as a prospective state rank holder early and give any special attention and coaching? How important is the choice of a school in achieving high marks in the examinations?
As I secured I rank in SSLC Board Exams, our school expected me. But I had no more special coaching.
A knowledge seeking student must choose a school which gives perfect teaching and not coaching. So, we should
study, we should write and we should solve test papers. This is my opinion. Because, I was considered an ordinary
student only.
12. What was the role of your parents and family in your preparations for your public examinations?
The seed for the goal to achieve state rank was sown by my father. Whenever I worry about him, I would remember
his words which inspired, inspires, will inspire me always. The growing goal was further grown by my mother.
She removed all the difficulties and made me feel confident. Before going to her job, she did all my works such
as arranging books, taking question papers etc. I couldn't forget my sister whom I ordered all the needs like
taking the needed books, filling ink in the pen, punching papers, taking tiffin boxes and so on. I am really
fortunate to have such a sister. It is a must to include my aunt and uncle who inspired me much and much more.
I think I won by my family's moral support.
13. How did you learn about your achieving the state rank in the examinations? What was your reaction when you first heard it?
Although I expected the State Rank, I was doubtful, fearful etc. I was watching news channels. It gave me much
pain when I couldn't find my name in the I and II places. Few tears had gone when my sister told us the news via
phone. She had seen the news in another channel. I was so excited, surprised, happy and thanked God, thanking
forever.
14. Did you have any time to play any sport, pursue any hobby during your preparation for the public examination?
It is correct to say that I didn't have. For my motivation and relaxation, I read a book named "You can win"
presented by Mr.Kumar. In other words, I couldn't pursue any hobby. Already, we had cut cable TV.
15. Your life must have changed after achieving the state rank. You must be busy receiving lot of congratulatory messages, awards, recognitions etc. Could you tell your experience since the results were released?
I was in Chennai to write AIPMT when the results were announced. I received many calls from my friends, relatives
etc. Reporters arrived there and I was excited. I received phone calls from Hello FM, AIR etc. When I stepped
off the train in Tirunelveli, I was received by some association members. Also when I was in train, I was
identified by others and they all wished me. Our village people are so happy to see me. But I want that is somewhat
less than that I received during 10th standard results.
16. Are there any special people you would like to thank for your achievement?
First of all, I wish to thank my grandma who in her old age took care of me and my sister. She struggled
a lot with us to awake, to get ready to school, to do our works etc. Most of this credit goes to her. Then,
I would like to thank my grandpa (grandma's brother) who supplied me some question papers. Also, he brought
me all the text books. Then, former teacher of our school Sr.Patricia, who also brought me many question
papers, books etc. And then my teachers who corrected my written papers and gave me valuable suggestions.
Friends who didn't interrupt me during studying and to a lot of well wishers, I wish to thank.
17. Tell us about your family.
My father died whenI was studying in IX standard. My aunt (mother's only sister) and uncle took care of us for
one year completely. My mother got a job as a teacher four months back (January 2009). I have a sister
S.Shabnam Sajidha who has just finished SSLC exams scoring 492/500 marks and secured III rank in our district.
My grandma (mother's mother) took care of us for the past four months as my mother was in Chennai.
18. What course have you chosen to pursue after your twelfth standard?
It is my childhood ambition I wish to become a doctor to serve the needy. Now, I choose MBBS to pursue.
I wish to become a deen and also an IAS officer. The wish to become doctor burnt in me because of my father's
death which was due to the carelessness of some doctors.
19. Finally, what is your advise to the students who would be taking their public examinations shortly?
* Don't waste the golden time indulging in chatting, watching TV serials, cricket games etc
* Finish the taught portions the same day itself * Take notes while listening. Read the text again and again * After studying, write it immediately. Correct by yourself and find the mistakes. Try to avoid these * When you begin the next portion, revise the former * Before studying, develop the confidence that we could study and memorise. Think that the text is very simple * Allot atleast one hour for each subject in home * Be frank to clear your doubts immediately * Study some lessons which need more understanding in fresh hours especially in morning hours * Revised the studied portions again and again in a week, months etc. Try to work out some question papers * Success is 99 percent failure - Soichiro Honda. So try to learn from failures * Present your answers well * Mark the diagram parts in a neat manner * In every success, there lies a see of failure - Sri Aurobindo. So be careful in presenting your answers * Sleep well atleast 5 hours without interruption * Leave atleast 10 minutes for 1 hour continuous reading * Draw diagrams, write text matters, formulae often * Highlight your answers. No need to decorate. Avoid writing more for 3 marks Q&A. Concentrate in key points * Do more than hear - listen! Do more than listen - Understand!! - John C.Rhodes (from "You can win") Prayerful wishes for your exams. All the best. From your lovable sister. |
