1. Congratulations on getting the state rank in the HSC examinations. Was it a surprise when it came or were you expecting it any way?
I expected this earlier itself. I expected State First but I am quite happier with state Second because I have lost it in one mark difference.

2. Many schools and students start their preparation for the twelfth standard examinations while in the 11th standard itself. When did you start your preparations for the 12th standard public examinations?
I started my preparations from January 2009. I didn’t take much risk. I used to complete my lessons daily. So it became easy for me in 12th standard. We used to have 5 unit tests and then 4 full revisions. So we are almost thorough with all the portions 2 months prior to the public examination.

3. Was the teaching and materials provided by the school sufficient for your preparations or did you take any special coaching for any of the subjects?
Our teachers provided us surplus materials. I didn’t went for any special coaching class or tuition. Thus teaching and materials provided by the school itself was quite sufficient.

4. For how many hours per day did you study?
I used to wake up at 5 o clock in the morning and study till 11 pm, a minimum study hour of 12 hours per day.

5. How was your typical school working day like? How would you allot time for each of your work?
I used to complete all my works in the school itself. After coming home, I used to revise all the lessons that I have read in the class.

6. How was your typical school holiday (weekend etc) like? How would you allot time for each of your work?
We used to have Sunday classes. For the past two years, we didn’t have television in our home. I used to take rest during holidays and would complete my preparations for the upcoming school examinations. We didn’t went to any relative’s home and nobody visited us for the past two years. In fact, we didn’t have any celebrations during festivals like Diwali etc

7. Did you approach preparation for each of the subject (Language, English, Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Biology/Computer Science) differently or was your approach the same to each of the subject?
No I used to approach each and every subject in a different manner

8. If your approach to each of the subjects were different, how did you approach the preparation for -
a. Language (Tamil) Paper

For paper I, I used to concentrate much on one words which gives you a complete total of nearly 60 marks. In case of 4 marks and 8 marks, I used to give sub-topics to each and every question. I split up the answer into 4 topics so that it is easy to award 4 marks for 4 topics for the correctors. I used to highlight the key words in a different colour (for e.g. black, violet) which would correctly catch up the correctors attraction.

Regarding Paper II, much attention should be given to Nayam Parattal and one should practice a minimum of 30 poems of Bharathiyar, Bharathidasan, Kavimani, Desiga Vinayagampillai and Ramalingam Pillai. That is the only area where students usually loose their marks.

b. English Paper

Regarding Paper I, I collected many quotations and Thirukkurals for the essays and paragraphs. I concentrated much on the book-back exercise because it is more or less a model question for each type. I worked out the grammar questions asked in the previous public examinations and also many model questions of several bazaar guides.

Regarding Paper II, I used to refer many guides, because it gives you a different view about the particular topic. I used to read the Daily papers to update myself with current news about international issues like global warming, groundwater depletion etc for my general essays.

c. Physics Paper

Right from the beginning, I used to read my Physics lesson in the following way

1) I used to read the full lesson thoroughly and refresh myself
2) I used to read the 10 marks first and then 5 marks
3) While reading 10 marks and 5 marks itself, I used to complete my 3 marks side by side
4) I used to work out all the problems. I have never left even a single problem in the book
5) Then I would see the book back one words and the government questions one words.

d. Chemistry Paper

Right from the beginning, I used to concentrate much on Organic Chemistry because it is the easiest way to score more marks. I listed out all the naming reactions separately and mechanism separately and used to study them with special care. I used to write and see all the equations repeatedly till I am familiar with them. I also drew and see all the diagrams. Regarding Chemistry, I spent much of my time only for preparing one words.

e. Mathematics Paper

Maths comes by practice

This is what my mathes teacher advised us. I used to work out at least three or four sums in each model during each and every examination and at the time of public, I have almost worked out all the sums. I would prepare the one mark questions from the book-back exercise and COME book.

Maths is the easiest subject in the world only when it is understood

Indeed, whenever I sit to do preparation for a chapter. I first of all recall all the formulas and then start doing the sums.

f. Biology Paper

I am not very good at drawing the diagrams. So, I spent much time only in practicing diagrams. I used to write and see all the key words in a question. For each and every question, I used to draw a flow chart and in this way. I could recall all the answers in a short time and could complete all the lessons too.

9. How important are handwriting and learning to write speedily in the examinations? Is there anything that a student can do to improve these two aspects?
Regarding language papers, Handwriting is a must and of prime importance should be given to page maintenance. Even if your handwriting is poor, if you present your answers without any scribbling and over writings, it will appear good. In case of III part papers, it is secondary. Repeated practice will give you the necessary speed.

10. Are there any strict Dos and Donts that you would recommend a student preparing for his or her twelfth standard examinations to adhere to?
Dos
1. Should underline all the key words
2. Should highlight the key words with different color pens especially black, violet, brown etc in Tamil and English
3. Should understand each and every concept thoroughly
4. Always be optimistic

Donts 1. Always think that You can. Never think that you can’t achieve
2. Don’t read during late night especially during examination days
3. If you read a question, first complete it fully and then only you should skip it to the next one. Don’t rush while reading

11. Did your school identify you as a prospective state rank holder early and give any special attention and coaching? How important is the choice of a school in achieving high marks in the examinations?
Yes, Indeed more than 15 students were expected to get state rank and I was one among them. Teachers encouraged me much. There wasn’t any special attention. The coaching was common to all the students. Our correspondent usually looks at each and every test paper and write some comments and suggestions. It was very much useful. My English teacher asked me to write the essays myself and then he checked it and made the necessary connections.

12. What was the role of your parents and family in your preparations for your public examinations?
Success is the result of unity and co-operation. This is 100% true in my case. My parents were the real succeeders. My mom used to wake up early in the morning and also used to sit up with me during late night. Though my native is Harur, my family shifted to Uthangarai for my sake. My father daily used to go to Harur b;y bus. My mom’s major is Chemistry and she used to set a question paper which consists of 20 one words which comprises of at least one word from each and every lesson. Whenever I am depressed, she seemed to be my light house. She used to read the daily news papers in order to update herself with general current issues so that it could be useful for my general essays in English II. She faced all the struggles posed in front of her with great determination. Thus, if I want to say in one word, she is my inspiration and she is everything to me. My father’s role is no less than hers.

13. How did you learn about your achieving the state rank in the examinations? What was your reaction when you first heard it?
When I learnt that I was a state II rank holder, I felt that I was on top of the world. My joy knew no bounds. My mom hugged and kissed me. I have never seen such happiness on the face of my parents. They were so proud of me. My father said Till yesterday, you were called as Chandrasekaran’s daughter. From today, I will be called Karunya’s dad. I was dumbfounded and tears rolled own on my cheeks.

14. Did you have any time to play any sport, pursue any hobby during your preparation for the public examination?
My hobby is reading books. Whenever I feel depressed, I used to read the book You can win. Its really the best book I have ever read. Each and every student must read at least some topics in the book before entering Class 12. It is fully an optimistic book. I used to have a quick glance at the sports page daily. Only studying was my hobby.

15. Your life must have changed after achieving the state rank. You must be busy receiving lot of congratulatory messages, awards, recognitions etc. Could you tell your experience since the results were released?
There was lot of celebrations and joy in our school and home. I must tell you this experience. Two days after the results, I went to a relative’s home and I travelled by bus. I was sitting near an old lady. She suddenly asked me if I was Karunya and asked me whether I was a state rank holder. I was surprised and when I said yes, she introduced me to all her relatives and congratulated me. Also many of my juniors also phoned my home and asked tips. I couldn’t express the joy I felt at that moment.

16. Are there any special people you would like to thank for your achievement?
I would like to thank all my teachers, parents, my principal, correspondent and I would like to dedicate this achievement to my school. I also like to thank my friends who encouraged me a lot. I would like to thank my former Biology teacher Mr.K.S. Karthikeyan who gave me a lot of advice and tips to achieve this.

I also like to thank Mr.R.Ilango, my 10th standard English master who encouraged me a lot. He is no more with us.

17. Tell us about your family.
My father Mr.T.Chandirasekaran is an advocate and my mother Mrs.P.Muraleeswari is a home maker. My only sister Ms.C.Praveetha is doing her 10th standard in Vidya Mandir Matric. Hr. Sec. School in Uthangarai. My mother used to wake up early in the morning in order to wake me up and used to sit up with me in night until I complete my studies. Each and every student will definitely be a state rank holder if he/she gets a mom like my mom.

18. What course have you chosen to pursue after your twelfth standard?
I have chosen to pursue medicine and become a cardiologist. My role model is Dr.Cherian and I would like to earn good name for my parents and relatives in the society

19. Finally, what is your advise to the students who would be taking their public examinations shortly?
I used to say the following to my juniors If you can’t do that, nobody can do that, Impossible is a word which could be found in a fool’s dictionary.

Health plays a crucial role in scoring marks. One should take healthy food and avoid junk foods at least three months prior to the examination.

It is quite usual becoming tired while studying late at night. At that time, think about your parents and according to me, it is the best way to refresh your mind.

During examination days, I request the students not to burn the midnight oil. A minimum sleep of 7 hours prior to the examination is a must. Don’t get tensed. Be relaxed. Always remember, This is not the end. This is the beginning.

Finally, I would like to say this. Indeed, this is my secret of success too.

Concentration in a contracted area is the key to open the door of success - Bharathiyar

Success in life is a matter not so much of talent or opportunity as of concentration and perseverance.

The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential - these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence

Vision without action is a day dream. Action without vision is a night mare
