Was it a surprise when it came
or were you expecting it any way?
Thank you. Yes, getting the state rank was really a surprise. But I really expected marks more than 1180. So the marks I secured were an expected one.
2. Many schools and students start their preparation for the twelfth standard examinations while in
the 11th standard itself. When did you start your preparations for the 12th standard public examinations?
No. Our school never starts the preparation for 12th standard during the 11th standard. We start our 12th standard preparation only after our 11th standard public examination.
3. Was the teaching and materials provided by the school sufficient for your preparations or did you
take any special coaching for any of the subjects?
Yes, the study materials provided by our school was sufficient. Initially for the first 3 months (June – September), I attended Maths tuitions. But later I did not find time to go for tuitions. More over the weekly tests conducted by our teachers provided the additional training.
4. For how many hours per day did you study?
I used to study for 5 - 6 hours per day.
5. How was your typical school working day like? How would you allot time for each of your
work?
Our school timings is from 8:20 to 4:30. I start studying from 6:00pm to 11:00pm. I complete all my school work by night and reverse it in the morning for an hour.
6. How was your typical school holiday (weekend etc) like? How would you allot time for each of your
work?
Every Sunday is a holiday. We don’t have special classes on Sunday. I study for at least 12 hours during my holidays. I allot 3 hours for each of my main subjects. I also spend my time to revise all the lessons taught during the previous week.
7. Did you approach preparation for each of the subject (Language, English, Physics, Chemistry,
Maths, Biology/Computer Science) differently or was your approach the same to each of the subject?
My approach to each of the subject was the same. But the subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Biology required a lot of time while the language papers required only 5 - 6 hours a week. But I did not neglect my language papers.
8. If your approach to each of the subjects were different, how did you approach the preparation for
-
a. Language (Tamil) Paper
I used to write the memory poems and practice it and I read the Q&A often whenever I get free time so that my spelling mistakes get reduced. Even though I had a guide to study, I wrote my own answers. I prepared my own answers and wrote it in my own way of presentation. It helped me gain more marks. I concentrated more on objectives. b. English Paper I gave more importance to grammar area and prepared my own summary and paragraph. I used to listen carefully in the classes so that we learn a lot of new words in the class. Again I spent a lot of time reading the lessons which helped me understand the content and also helped me score well in the objectives. c. Physics Paper I practiced the circuit diagrams and understood the concept well. I took a separate note and solved all the problems given in the book without the help of a calculator. This practice helped me avoid the mistakes which we commit during calculations. d. Chemistry Paper I practiced the equations and sums often. I gave more importance to the textual one word questions. I did not follow guides for any of my subjects. I was thorough with the book which is more than enough to get Centum. e. Mathematics Paper I solved many previous years question papers. From the beginning of the academic year, I started solving all the sums in my homework note and I corrected it myself. So because of this practice, by the month of January, I was thorough with all the sums given in the book. f. Biology Paper I practiced all the diagrams. I also wrote all the botanical terms atleast five times so that those terms were made thorough. We often had tests in biology, which also boosted up my confidence. 9. How important are handwriting and learning to write speedily in the examinations? Is there
anything that a student can do to improve these two aspects?
Handwriting gives the first impression about a student. I was able to write speedily using both the inks (both blue and black), so that the important points were highlighted. A neat and legible handwriting is enough. Equal spacing between words and lines can improve the neatness of exam papers.
10. Are there any strict Dos and Donts that you would recommend a student preparing for his or her twelfth standard examinations to adhere to?
Avoid watching TV for at least a year. Use every minute usefully. Clarify your doubts then and there. Understand the concepts. Give more importance to the previous years questions, textual questions. Never ignore the school tests. Take each test seriously. Analyse each of your test paper after correction, find the mistakes and never commit the same again.
11. Did your school identify you as a prospective state rank holder early and give any special attention and coaching? How important is the choice of a school in achieving high marks in the examinations?
As I was a district rank holder in my 10th standard, my school gave me some special encouragement to raise me a state rank holder. Never choose a school because of its previous years’ records. Look for good teaching, facilities and healthy environment. If it suits your style of studying pursue your studies. A school with good teaching and coaching can help in achieving high marks.
12. What was the role of your parents and family in your preparations for your public examinations?
My parents were really supportive and encouraging. My parents and my sister (now studying 10th standard) gave up watching TV from my IX std. My mother gave me good food. She also helped me in planning my works. My grandfather bought me all the books which I needed for my studies. My father and sister always used to say that I would definitely be a state rank holder. It was their confidence that helped me reach this rank. My sister was very co-operative. She helped me draw my diagrams and gave comments about the performance in the exams. My parents and my sister gave me rewards when I do well in the exam and they provided me a calm environment.
13. How did you learn about your achieving the state rank in the examinations? What was your reaction when you first heard it?
My uncle called me and asked to switch on the TV. As soon as we saw my name in the flash news, we all jumped with joy. And this joy made my heart miss the beat for 5 seconds and then we were made too busy to experience the happiness.
14. Did you have any time to play any sport, pursue any hobby during your preparation for the public examination?
No, I did not have time to do any other work. But in order to relax myself, my father and sister borrowed books from library and I spend my leisure hours reading those novels.
15. Your life must have changed after achieving the state rank. You must be busy receiving lot of congratulatory messages, awards, recognitions etc. Could you tell your experience since the results were released?
Yes, my life has completely changed. In fact, we received nearly 200 phone calls within a day and I was not able to attend some of my phone calls as were giving interviews. To be frank, for nearly four days after the results were published, we did not have proper sleep, food etc because we were too busy attending functions, meeting some important officials and ministers. And all these experiences are still exciting and unbelievable.
16. Are there any special people you would like to thank for your achievement?
Yes, I would like to thank my parents, sister, grandparents. Our schools Principal Mr.T.C.Pandian, Mrs.Rita Sebastian (Vice-Principal of my previous school), my friends Raghavi, Shubha, Rajalakshmi. They were very much encouraging. They were very confident that I would definitely secure a state rank. Their advice boosted me up. And I would also like to thank my English sir Mr.Kumaravel, Maths tuition teachers Mr.Manickam and Mr.Jeya Prakash.
17. Tell us about your family.
Mine is a small family. My father is an Associate Professor in Veterinary University Training and Research Centre, Rajapalayam. My mother is a housewife. My sister is now doing her 10th standard.
18. What course have you chosen to pursue after your twelfth standard?
I have chosen MBBS course to pursue after my schooling.
19. Finally, what is your advise to the students who would be taking their public examinations shortly?
Take every test seriously. Try to learn from your mistakes. Plan your work. Never omit even a single lesson . Getting a state rank is not a difficult task. Proper planning and execution can make you achieve this feat. Fix your target. Often repeat the target. Bear it in your mind that you will definitely reach it. And this positive though will automatically make your brain and body work harder and help you touch your goal. Never ignore your elders advice. It may be of some help to you. Work hard. Nothing is impossible. Aim high and reach it. All the best.
