1. Congratulations on getting the state rank in the HSC examinations. Was it a surprise when it came or were you expecting it any way?
It was quite a surprise when I came to know that I was the State Topper. Though my teachers, parents and relatives were expecting me to get a state rank, I was very much thrilled and excited when I came to know about my performance

2. Many schools and students start their preparation for the twelfth standard examinations while in the 11th standard itself. When did you start your preparations for the 12th standard public examinations?
I started my preparations for the 12th standard public examinations only after my 11th standard exams were over. I believe that 11th portions are equally important to build a strong foundation for the 12th.

3. Was the teaching and materials provided by the school sufficient for your preparations or did you take any special coaching for any of the subjects?
I did not take any special coaching for any of the subjects. Excellent, coaching, organised revisions and well-planned schedules and learning materials provided by my school was more than sufficient for my preparations.

4. For how many hours per day did you study?
On usual working days, I studied for 4-5 hours. During holidays, I studied for 12 to 14 hours with sufficient breaks in between.

5. How was your typical school working day like? How would you allot time for each of your work?
On typical school working days, I spent 4 to 5 hours for studying. I spent 1 hour for every core subject and minimum 30 minutes for English and Language. I usually spent 3-4 hours in the evening and minimum 2 hours in the morning.

6. How was your typical school holiday (weekend etc) like? How would you allot time for each of your work?
On typical school holidays, I spent 8 -12 hours depending on the assignments and work load givent at school. During exams, I spent 12-15 hours with adequate breaks.

7. Did you approach preparation for each of the subject (Language, English, Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Biology/Computer Science) differently or was your approach the same to each of the subject?
My preparation for each of the subjects varied. I did my language (Tamil) and English with a passion for the subject. I did my core subjects with full involvement and concentration. I gave sufficient time for practising the numerical problems, formulae and equations in Physics and Chemistry. I gave more written practise for Maths and practised Biology and Physics sincerely.

8. If your approach to each of the subjects were different, how did you approach the preparation for -
a. Language (Tamil) Paper

First of all, I would like to thank my Tamil teacher Mrs.Shantha who literally spoon-fed us preparing her own notes for every topic and gave a photo-copy of it to each one of us. She was very friendly, affectionate and more than a teacher. She gave many guidelines and tips to score high marks in Tamil. I usually spent 30 minutes everyday to learn Tamil. My friends and I used to be at the back of her to get external quotes in order to include them in our answers.

b. English Paper

Firstly, I would like to express my thanks to my class teacher Mrs.Sudipta Sinha who was a constant motivator. The regular class tests apart from the school exams helped me a lot. I spent 30 minutes - 1 hours a day for English. She constantly advised us to use textual as well as external quotes in all the answers.

As far as English is concerned, I spent more time in collecting external quotes. I wrote down the key points for the most common essays frequently asked in the exams and prepared proverbs and quotations for the same which was very much useful.

c. Physics Paper

I would like to thank my physics teachers Mrs.Deepa Ramesh (XI) and Mr.N.Varadarajan (XII) - each of whom taught us with a great passion.

As per the instructions of my teachers, I concentrated more in practising the diagrams, formulae and numerical problems.

d. Chemistry Paper

First of all, I would like to thank my Chemistry sir Mr.Hariharan who treated every student as his own son and daughter and took great pains to bring out our best. He gave us well-planned schedules and regular class tests that were very helpful.

According to his instruction and advise, I spent more time for Organic Chemistry, practised the difficult equations, numerical problems and diagrams.

e. Mathematics Paper

Firstly, I am thankful to my Maths teachers, Mr.S.Venkataraman (XI and XII) and Mr.V.Srinivasan (XI) for their motivation and support.

I gave more written practise as far as Mathematics i concerned.

f. Biology Paper

Firstly, I would like to express my deep heartfelt thanks to my Biology teacher Miss Uma Sankari who was very duty conscious. 'Work is worship' was her way of teaching. The regular tests and assignments given by her were very much useful. As per her advise, I gave more importance to the diagrams, made sure to write my answers in points and underlined the key words. Infact, I spent more time for Biology than for any other subject.

9. How important are handwriting and learning to write speedily in the examinations? Is there anything that a student can do to improve these two aspects?
Handwriting, learning to write speedily and presentation are very important. Writing 2 or 3 short answers every day and writing mock tests or home assignments regularly will help a student to improve these aspects and to score better in the examinations.

10. Are there any strict Dos and Donts that you would recommend a student preparing for his or her twelfth standard examinations to adhere to?
I strongly believe that one full year of sacrifice is very much essential to come out in flying colours inthe 12th standard public examinations.

DOs

* Prepare your daily lessons regularly
* Take up your school exams seriously
* Never sacrifice your sleep. Minimum 6 hours of sound sleep is a must
* Take good care of your health. Have a balanced diet
* Never feel pressurised. Relax yourself by doing meditation or yoga to help you feel fresh and stress-free
* Follow your teachers' instructions strictly

Donts

* Avoid watching television
* Avoid chatting with your friends over the telephone for long hours
* Avoid taking junk food
* Sacrifice temporary pleasure for permanent satisfaction
11. Did your school identify you as a prospective state rank holder early and give any special attention and coaching? How important is the choice of a school in achieving high marks in the examinations?
Yes, my school did identify me as a prospective state rank holder. Though they did not give me any special coaching, my school principal Mrs. Ramaa Subramaniam and other teachers were of great support constantly motivating and encouraging me to bring out my hidden talents and do my best. They treated everyone of us as their own son and daughter and strived very hard to bring out our best. In that way, I think, the choice of a reputed school is also very much important in achieving high marks in the examinations.

12. What was the role of your parents and family in your preparations for your public examinations?
My parents and family members were of a great support to me. As my sister, Harini was also writing her X public exam, my parents sacrificed watching television this whole year. Both of us received a lot of encouragement and motivation from our family members particularly my aunts Mrs.Malar Vizhi and Miss Devi. Since both of my parents are working, in order to give my sister and me a moral and an emotional support, my mother took one and half month leave. In fact, my sister was my role model and I am her role model.

13. How did you learn about your achieving the state rank in the examinations? What was your reaction when you first heard it?
I received a phone call from my class teacher Mrs. Sudipta Sinha mam saying that I had topped the State with a score of 1182. She congratulated me and asked me to come to school immediately. I was very much excited and delighted when I first heard it. When I came to know that it was my friend T.Rupika who was the State 2nd rank holder, I was even more happier.

14. Did you have any time to play any sport, pursue any hobby during your preparation for the public examination?
I did spend some time playing my favourite sport - Badminton and pursuing my favourite hobby - listening to music and visiting the nearby temples which helped me to relax and feel much better during my preparation for the public examination.

15. Your life must have changed after achieving the state rank. You must be busy receiving lot of congratulatory messages, awards, recognitions etc. Could you tell your experience since the results were released?
Yes my life has changed after achieving the State Rank. I have been receiving lot of congratulatory messages, awards and gifts from my friends, relatives and neighbours. I am very happy as everyone who knows me feel as if their own daughter had achieved it.

16. Are there any special people you would like to thank for your achievement?
I would like to attribute my success to my teachers, parents, relatives and neighbours for their great support, constant encouragement, motivation, devotion, sacrifices and above all their blessings and God's grace. The very special people whom I would like to thank are my parents - Mrs.V.Selvaraj, Mrs. R. Rengammal, my Principal Mrs.Ramaa Subramaniam, my teachers Mrs.Shantha, Mrs.Sudipta Sinha, Miss Uma, Mr.Hariharan, Mrs.Seema, Mr.N.Varadarajan, Mr.S.Venkataraman, my relatives Mrs.Malar Vizhi, Miss Devi, my sister S.Harini and above all God.

17. Tell us about your family.
My family is a small and a sweet one. My father, Mr.V.Selvaraj is working as a senior E.D.P. officer in 'The Hindu'. My mother, Mrs.R.Rengammal is working as a Postal Assistant in the Mount Road Post Office. My sister, S.Harini has written her X CBSE exam. I am thankful to God to have given me such a beautiful family.

18. What course have you chosen to pursue after your twelfth standard?
I have chosen to pursue Medicine and specialise in Gynaecology in the near future.

19. Finally, what is your advise to the students who would be taking their public examinations shortly?
* First of all, give importance to English and Language as well - apart from the core subjects to boost up your total
* Take care of your presentation and hand writing. Make it neat and legible. Underline or highlight the key points and words. Write the answers in points rather than as a paragraph
* Have faith and belief in yourself. Believe your teachers. Follow their instructions without any objections
* Spend minimum 4-5 hours every day and 12 hours during holidays with adequate breaks in between
* Never sacrifice your sleep. Minimum 6-7 hours of sound sleep is a must
* Avoid watching television, chatting with your friends, eating junk food
* Spend quality time rather than quantity time
* Take good care of your health. Have a balanced diet
* Above all, have faith in God!

AIM AS HIGH AS YOU CAN! DO NOT LET ANYTHING LIMIT YOUR FAITH! THE FRUITS OF HARDWORK ARE ALWAYS THE SWEETEST! ALL THE VERY BEST TO ALL THE STUDENTS WHO WOULD BE TAKING THEIR PUBLIC EXAMS SHORTLY!
