District I place in X standard
1. Congratulations on getting the state rank in the HSC examinations. Was it a surprise when it came or were you expecting it any way?
Thank you very much for your wishes. From the day I started preparing with my XII syllabus, I fixed my target in each subject and worked for it. So I definitely expected a good mark.

2. Many schools and students start their preparation for the twelfth standard examinations while in the 11th standard itself. When did you start your preparations for the 12th standard public examinations?
I had expected a state rank in X standard itself but I was able to get only District I rank. So I made up my mind to achieve state rank in XII standard. Probably, with that thirst of getting the state rank, I worked smartly to achieve it. I started preparing for my XI standard first and applied those same skills for the XII standard public exam.

3. Was the teaching and materials provided by the school sufficient for your preparations or did you take any special coaching for any of the subjects?
The teaching and materials provided by the school was sufficient for me to prepare for my board exam. I didn't take any special coaching class for any of the subjects. Also I didn't depend upon any of the guides except for the two languages.

4. For how many hours per day did you study?
I studied for 12-14 hours per day.

5. How was your typical school working day like? How would you allot time for each of your work?
During school working days, our daily time table was balanced enough for various subjects. Our teachers helded us in allocating the rest of the time for further preparations.

6. How was your typical school holiday (weekend etc) like? How would you allot time for each of your work?
As above, our teachers helped us with our weekend study plans and preparation for tests. Apart from this, I would find time for my relaxation by means of playing badminton, spending time with my sister, listening to music and playing with kids.

7. Did you approach preparation for each of the subject (Language, English, Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Biology/Computer Science) differently or was your approach the same to each of the subject?
My preparation for each of the subjects was different. In the beginning, I read all the subject books line by line. Later, I prepared for the subjects according to weightage specified in the blue print.

8. If your approach to each of the subjects were different, how did you approach the preparation for -
a. Language (Tamil) Paper

As far as language is concerned, handwriting and presentation are the key factors. So, I took much care in improving them. I used to try and understand the concepts covered in those pirtions as soon as possible and practise on them. I was very careful in choosing the questions that I had to answer. Tamil, being my mother tongue, I have a natural liking towards it. While answering the questions, I used to compile the points from the text book and some guides, keeping the teachers' explanations in my mind. Summing up all these points, I would present my answers in my own style. I would highlight 'quotes' for all questions. Writing without spelling mistakes and Sandhi pizhai (சந்திப் பிழை) would always fetch good marks in Tamil.

b. English Paper

My preparation for English and Tamil was almost similar. For getting a state rank, I took special care to concentrate on these two subjects also. Reading up the text thoroughly and presenting apt answers without grammatical mistakes fetched me more marks. I gave lot of importance to strengthen my vocabulary and always ensured that I scored full marks in this section. For attempting logical sequence, multiple choice questions and comprehension, a proper understanding of supplementary reader lessons is important. Then, I analysed the areas in which I was weak and took care of those areas.

c. Physics Paper

As far as Physics is concerned, a good and indepth understanding of the concepts helps in answering 1 mark questions. For this reason, I spent more time in studying my lessons thoroughly. I gave preference to derivations, diagrams and problems. Attempting these questions in the exams saved my time. Since Physics makes me think and gives work to my brain, I took it up as a challenge.

d. Chemistry Paper

In the beginning, seeing the 22 lessons, a fear set-in me. But soon, on studying the lessons, I felt it was a lot easy. Similar to Physics, since Chemistry is also an application oriented subject, I studied each and every concept thoroughly. Balancing the equations was easy for me and I had practised it so many times and I like it to the most. Attempting organic part saved my time. While answering 1 mark questions, I would use multiangular thinking and elimination method.

e. Mathematics Paper

Mathematics is an easy and interesting subject. I would study the formulae and proceed with practising sums. I would study portions markswise. Firstly, I prepared for 10 mark questions, then 6 mark questions, and then 3 mark questions. Finally, I prepared for 1 mark questions from book back and COME book. Also, I had undergone different types of tests in 1 mark questions. In our school, particularly for mathematics, our teachers followed negative marking system. So, I was very conscious of this while taking up my mathematics exams. Even minor mistakes were pointed out to us and that helepd me in rectifying my mistakes. I would have written nearly 17 full portion tests, finally helping me to score 200/200.

f. Biology Paper

For Biology, I prepared portions markwise, Instead of doing it chapterwise. First, I would complete studying 10 marks and 5 marks. I gave lot of importance to 3 marks and 1 marks which play major role in getting centum. I would regularly practise diagrams. My teachers simplified certain difficult chapters and that helped me in preparing for exams in an easier way. I used to differentiate all confusing concepts and prepare them in a systematic way.

9. How important are handwriting and learning to write speedily in the examinations? Is there anything that a student can do to improve these two aspects?
Yes, handwriting and learning to write fast are very important in the examinations. Handwriting cannot be improved all at once. It has to be improved gradually. So it is better to begin at a younger age itself. Handwriting is important especially in language papers where it plays a major role in securing maximum marks. Only if a student has the concepts at one's fingertips and has had repeated practice, he/she would be able to write faster.

10. Are there any strict Dos and Donts that you would recommend a student preparing for his or her twelfth standard examinations to adhere to?
Do's

(i) Fix the target (keep it secretly)
(ii) Observe the class keenly
(iii) Be focussed
(iv) Listen to the advice of parents and teachers and follow it
(v) Take enough rest and have relaxation
(vi) Eat fresh vegatables and fruits daily.
Eating food items which have high iron content helps in improving memory power.

Donts'

(i) Avoid watching TV and cinemas
(ii) Reduce chatting unnecessarily with friends and relatives
(iii) Avoid family functions and parties
(iv) Play games, but in moderate
(v) Don't get deviated from your target at any cost

11. Did your school identify you as a prospective state rank holder early and give any special attention and coaching? How important is the choice of a school in achieving high marks in the examinations?
No, I was not given any special attention and coaching. Our school gave same attention to all the students. Choice of a school is very much important in achieving marks. Teachers have to be dedicated to their work. My teachers hahave as friends with the students and as such they would come to know their students' positives and negatives. At the same time, they would be strict if the students committed mistakes.

12. What was the role of your parents and family in your preparations for your public examinations?
My family's support was immense in the achievement of my state rank. My mother took care of my health and she gave me a balanced diet. Also she motivated me whenever I felt low and helped me in gaining my self-confidence. To tell about my sister, she did help me a lot. Thus on the whole, I feel gifted to be a part of such a loving and supporting family. I thank God for having given me such a beautiful family.

13. How did you learn about your achieving the state rank in the examinations? What was your reaction when you first heard it?
The moment I heard my result, I was stunned and I had no words to express my happiness. Firstly, I cried out of joy. I expected my state rank, but I was speechless when it came out true. I felt as if I was flying high in the sky.

14. Did you have any time to play any sport, pursue any hobby during your preparation for the public examination?
I didn't find enough time to play any sport or pursue any hobby during my preparation for the public exam. Though I relax myself during weekends, I spent my time only on studies for last 5 months before Board Exam.

15. Your life must have changed after achieving the state rank. You must be busy receiving lot of congratulatory messages, awards, recognitions etc. Could you tell your experience since the results were released?
Yes, no doubt my life has completely changed after achieving my state rank. I feel proud of myself as I have brought fame and laurels to my parents, my family, my teachers, school and to Hosur. I have become very famous and I'm recognised wherever I go. I have now become a role model for many students. Many have started coming to me for tips and guidance so as to achieve academic excellence. The happiness that I get is immeasurable and invaluable. This achievement motivates me to take up newer challenges in my academic career. I hope to able to equip myself well for my professional career and my life in general.

16. Are there any special people you would like to thank for your achievement?
Yes, the special people I would like to thank are :

1) My mother: whose support and guidance has been an integral part in my achieving the state rank

2) My sister: who has never disturbed me or distracted me whenever I studied. On the contrary, she helped and supported me a lot

3) My principal and my teachers: who are ready to do anything for their students and find happiness in their students' success after crossing all my hurdles. They pointed out my mistakes either big or small. They made me realise the importance of performing well in XII by their inspiring speeches. Though I had narrowly missed State Rank in X standard, my parents, my teachers, my principal, correspondents brought in a positive attitude in me and made me feel that 'I can get State Rank' in XII standard.

17. Tell us about your family.
My family is a small family of four. My father - V.Kesavan who is a quality control senior executive in Ashok Leyland.

My mother - K.Malarvizhi who is an S.G. Asst. Teacher in Hosur Block

My cute and sweet sister - K.Kiruthiga who is promoted from IX standard to X standard.

18. What course have you chosen to pursue after your twelfth standard?
I want to become a Doctor and specialise in Radiation Oncology (Cancer Specialist). My inspiration is my cousin C. Mekala who is doing her Ph.D final year in the same field in UK.

19. Finally, what is your advise to the students who would be taking their public examinations shortly?
Students should set their target or goals clearly. Think that each of the subjects would impart knowledge and play a role in achieving your target. Don't only work hard but also work smart. If you read your subjects with interest, involvement and enjoyment, automatically you will be able to score marks and success will knock your door. If a subject is easy for you, don't get over confident. If a subject is difficult for you, don't have fear. Think that it is a challenge for you and face it. Feel free to talk with the teachers, don't feel shy to ask questions and get your doubts clarified immediately.

Smart work + Self-confidence + Hope = Sure Success.
