1. Congratulations on getting the state rank in the HSC examinations. Was it a surprise when it came
or were you expecting it any way?
Yes, it was a surprise for me. I was expecting to score high marks in the core subjects (above 195). But as like everyone, I also wished to become a topper.
2. Many schools and students start their preparation for the twelfth standard examinations while in
the 11th standard itself. When did you start your preparations for the 12th standard public examinations?
One cannot start preparing for the exams straightaway. First, one needs to understand the concepts and be well-versed with the contents of the text book. Only after this is done, we can start preparing in exam point of view. I started to understand from day one and to prepare in a exam mode from December.
3. Was the teaching and materials provided by the school sufficient for your preparations or did you
take any special coaching for any of the subjects?
Yes, they were more than enough. I never felt any need for special coaching for the boards. The frequent tests and particularly the set of one mark questions given by my school helped me a lot.
4. For how many hours per day did you study?
I did not have any particular timeframe. But I took care to finish my lessons when there was time.
5. How was your typical school working day like? How would you allot time for each of your
work?
I preferred to work late in the night. So, I did not wakeup very early in the morning. In the evenings, I would finish my assignments and record work and then start reading.
6. How was your typical school holiday (weekend etc) like? How would you allot time for each of your
work?
I used little time to relax my mind after a busy week. Then, I used to finish up my lessons which were taught during that week. I also brushed up the previously taught lessons.
7. Did you approach preparation for each of the subject (Language, English, Physics, Chemistry,
Maths, Biology/Computer Science) differently or was your approach the same to each of the subject?
Of course, each subject demands a different method of learning which varies from one person to another. One cannot adopt the same methodology to learn languages as that was used to study the core subjects.
8. If your approach to each of the subjects were different, how did you approach the preparation for
-
a. Language Paper
Legible handwriting and neat presentation are essential. While the first paper tests a student's knowledge and memory, the second paper lays emphasis on language skills and one's flavour for a particular language.
b. English Paper
Legible handwriting and neat presentation are again essential. But a good vocabulary and grammatical sense helps to score a lot. Also, knowledge of current affairs, got by reading newspapers and magazines, helps one in sections like sentence framing and essay writing.
c. Physics Paper
Answers should be written pointwise and not like an essay. Circuit diagrams and other diagrams should be practised well and drawn at appropriate places. Solving the textual problems again and again also helps. Better understanding helps to answer MCQs. Time management is necessary to finish the paper on time.
d. Chemistry Paper
The Chemistry syllabus is vast. So while preparing for exams, one should adopt a selective method of learning. But all the concepts should be understand to answer MCQs. Again, systematic answering, solving problems, better time management are essential here too. One exception is that equations should be properly learnt with understanding. During exam, one should choose questions which can be written quickly so as to finish the paper on time.
e. Mathematics Paper
For maths, solving the example and exercise problems again and again is a must. But to do well in MCQs, one should not
restrict oneself to the examples and exercise - but should understand all the concepts without leaving anything. Solving model papers also helps.
f. Biology Paper
Learning biology by rote memory cannot help. One needs to understand every section so as to answer questions systematically. As for diagrams, neatness and proper labelling are more important than being artistic. Proper time management and selective learning during exams are again very essential.
9. How important are handwriting and learning to write speedily in the examinations? Is there
anything that a student can do to improve these two aspects?
Examiners do not expect calligraphic style of writing. Writing legibly and neatly is enough. Quick writing is most important to finish the paper on time. Rather than rushing in the end, one can start writing speedily but neatly from the beginning. Solving model papers within the stipulated time helps a lot.
10. Are there any strict Do’s and Don’ts that you would recommend a student preparing for his or her twelfth standard examinations to adhere to?
I do not want to impose anything on others. But these are something I have learnt after being through 11th and 12th. Students can take this as an experience of their good friend.
Dos
- Concentrate on your work
- Understand rather than mugging up
- Attentive in your classes
- Be open to all ideas, but take decisions on your own
- Always be confident
- Adopt your own method of learning
Donts
- Never compare yourself with others
- Never be over confident
- Never try to imitate others
- Never get tensed up during exams
- Do not ridicule yourself on poor performances
11. How did you prepare for your entrance examinations? How was it different from your preparation for the public examinations? When did you begin your entrance exam preparations? Is there any institute or material that you would recommend for this?
The preparation for entrance examination requires a lot than for public exams. Understanding each and every concepts is essential. There is no blueprint for entrance exams. They keep varying from year to year. So we cannot follow selective method of learning. Intensive reading is essential for physical sciences and biology, being well versed with prescribed textbooks is sufficient. But for maths, one can use authorised materials because one needs to come across lot of problems to improve one's problem solving skills.
12. Did your school identify you as a prospective state rank holder early and give any special attention and coaching? How important is the choice of a school in achieving high marks in the examinations?
No, our school recognises everyone as a topper. According to the ability of each student, they are trained to score high marks. Yes, choice of a school is very important to be ready for the exams, but is is one's own ability and capacitiy to deliver in the exams (that is even more important).
13. What was the role of your parents and family in your preparations for your public examinations?
My parents never discouraged me. They always encouraged me to aim for full marks. They never compared me with anyone else. They provided a peaceful learning atmosphere for me at home. It was they who all the way guided me from my birth to this position. Their affection and blessings have and will also help me to be successful in my life.
14. How did you learn about your achieving the state rank in the examinations? What was your reaction when you first heard it?
I got the information from my school through phone - saying that I was state second. I and my family members were surprised. It was a moment of anxiety and of course, happiness too.
15. Did you have any time to play any sport, pursue any hobby during your preparation for the public examination?
I always played during my physical education classes in school I used those times to relax mentally and physically and also charge my mind and body for the future.
16. Your life must have changed after achieving the state rank. You must be busy receiving lot of congratulatory messages, awards, recognitions etc. Could you tell your experience since the results were released?
Yes. But I would not say my life has changed. I still lead the same kind of life. My feets are always on the ground. I will not forget my past. I always have been meeting my friends. I had the privilege of receiving an award from our Chief Minister. Various organisations and persons have also congratulated and rewarded me for my performance.
17. Are there any special people you would like to thank for your achievement?
First of all, I would like to thank my parents. Then of course my teachers, principal and my friends in school and all those people who have helped me in one way or the other. Last, but not the least, I want to thank the Almighty for His blessings which have made my dream come true.
18. Tell us about your family.
My father Mr.K.Selvaraju is an engineer at the Corporation of Chennai. My mother Mrs.Santhi is a home maker. She is a Bachelor of Arts in English. My brother - S.Selvaganesh - is doing his final year
19. What course have you chosen to pursue after your twelfth standard?
I have opted for B.E. in Electronics and Communications at College of Engineering (Anna University) at Guindy, Chennai
20. Finally, what is your advise to the students who would be taking their public examinations shortly?
I have neither the age not the wisdom to advise my juniors. But I would like them to be successful, but at the same time be more passionate towards their studies, home, country and to shower affection on people around them. And everyone should follow their own and innovative methods to succeed in life.
