1. Congratulations on getting the state rank in the HSC examinations. Was it a surprise when it came or were you expecting it any way?
Thank you for your wishes. I expected the state first rank even in 10th Matric. But I was pushed to 5th rank in the State Level. So I prepared my mind to work harder to secure State First Rank in +2 board exam. Unexpectedly, I have got the second rank. Even then, I feel very happy in getting state Second Rank.

2. Many schools and students start their preparation for the twelfth standard examinations while in the 11th standard itself. When did you start your preparations for the 12th standard public examinations?
It may be. But in our school after completing the first year portions, they switched over to second year portions without minding academic years. We the students were also advised to follow the same schedule by studying the lessons as soon as they are taught. They made our learning easier.

3. Was the teaching and materials provided by the school sufficient for your preparations or did you take any special coaching for any of the subjects?
The teaching and materials provided by the school was more than sufficient for my preparation and there was no need for me to take any special coaching for any of the subjects. I used some book to collect proverbs and quotes.

4. For how many hours per day did you study?
It is not fixed. Normally I wake up early in the morning around 5:00 am. I use to have a short sleep after my lunch as my school suggests. I go to bed usually around 11 O'clock. I feel five hours sleep is a must however heavy the work may be.

5. How was your typical school working day like? How would you allot time for each of your work?
Our school working day is from 9 am to 6 pm. Sometimes we attend the morning and evening special classes. Being a hostelite, I feel comfortable in planning my work. I list out all the lessons taught on that day and allot the time accordingly. Usually, I give more importance to my major subjects and I reserve the tough lessons to sudy in the early morning.

6. How was your typical school holiday (weekend etc) like? How would you allot time for each of your work?
* At some weekends, films are screened in our hostel. Otherwise we do some personal works and room maintenance work
* At month ends, we are sent to our home for three days. It is useful for purchasing study materials, refreshments and recreation. I also utilise these holidays for record works.

7. Did you approach preparation for each of the subject (Language, English, Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Biology/Computer Science) differently or was your approach the same to each of the subject?
I approached preparation for each of the subjects differently.

8. If your approach to each of the subjects were different, how did you approach the preparation for -
a. Language (Tamil) Paper

* I gave special importance to handwriting and presentation. I used colour pens
* I took special efforts to collect proverbs and quotations and to use them in appropriate contexts
* I prepared own essays by referring to several guides and relevant tamil books

b. English Paper

* Like Tamil paper, I gave special importance to handwriting and presentation. I used colour pens
* I took special efforts to collect proverbs and quotations and to use them in appropriate contexts
* I prepared own essays by referring several guides and relevant English books
* I took special care for grammar exercises. I practised them using question booklets given by English master.

c. Physics Paper

* I studied the daily lessons as soon as they are taught
* I worked out the derivations and problems as many times as possible
* In Physics, I practised circuit diagrams with special care. Once the circuit is drawn, we can write our our own description
As fas as possible, choose questions with derivations rather than with descriptions to score full marks.

d. Chemistry Paper

* I gave much importance to equations. I practised equations as many times as possible
* I studied various compounds comparatively in a table format
* I referred government question papers and blue print to know the pattern of questions and concentrated more on mark yielding areas.

e. Mathematics Paper

* I worked out the problems rather than just going through it
* I kept separate note book for formulae which helped me in effective recollection of the entire portion
* I worked out many model question papers to know the repeated problems and gained thorough knowledge of them
* As far as possible choose problems in which the answers can be verified instantly.

f. Biology Paper

* I practised the diagrams before studying a question. Biology must always be sudied by associating diagrams with their descriptions. By doing this, on seeing the diagram, the description will automatically run in our mind

* We need not spend much time in colouring and decorating the diagrams but we must and decorating the diagrams but we must label all the parts legibly. As far as possible, labelling should be on one side.

9. How important are handwriting and learning to write speedily in the examinations? Is there anything that a student can do to improve these two aspects?
Both are important. Handwriting is important for language and English. Speedy writing is essential for all subject papers. Both can be improved only by the practice of writing repeated model tests.

10. Are there any strict Dos and Donts that you would recommend a student preparing for his or her twelfth standard examinations to adhere to?
DOs
* Study daily lessons
* Proper planning and preparing correct time schedule for study
* Concentrate more on portions yielding high marks
* Beware of areas where students often make mistakes and note them in books
* Clear your doubts as soon as they arise
* Check the equipments like pen, pencil etc in the previous night of the exam day
* Take care of your health and food habits
* Safeguard your books and study materials carefully especially on the eve of exams

Donts

* Never omit any portion. At least we must have gross idea of even less important portions
* Don't practise extraordinary questions by referring to improper guides
* As far as possible, don't study late in the night by dispensing sleep
* Don't spend much time on certain pattern of questions which will never be asked in that particular chapter (Eg) In certain lessons, 3 mark questions won't be asked. For this purpose, one must refer blue print
* Don't scatter books in the study place. Keeping the books in regular arrangement will save much time
* Don't try new food items or hardly digestible food during exam season
* Don't attempt to read new chapters, that you have never read before, on the eve of exam
11. Did your school identify you as a prospective state rank holder early and give any special attention and coaching? How important is the choice of a school in achieving high marks in the examinations?
Yes, they isolated brilliant students as a separate batch and gave special training
* The choice of a school is very very important in achieving high marks especially for getting very high ranks. I submit my heartful special thanks to the directors, teachers and non-teaching staff of Vidhyaa Vikas Matric Higher Secondary School for guiding and aiding me in achieving this great success.

12. What was the role of your parents and family in your preparations for your public examinations?
My parents and family members played a vital role. Eventhough both of my parents are doctors, they bestowed special attention to my studies rather than their profession
* Whenever I had to recite the portions I studied, my mother helped me amidst her busy schedule
* My father rendered enormous help by collecting proverbs and quotations from various books and aided me in organising essays
* My parents never hesitated or delayed in getting me study materials and essential articles
* My parents gave me a lot of moral support by attending all the 'Parents Teachers Meet' and 'Visitors Day' without any omission
* Eventhough both of my parents are government doctors as well as busy private practitioners, they left everything, hired a small house near my school for two months and stayed with me during exams. This gave me new energy to face the exams and simultaneously my health was also taken care
* My younger brother who had annual examinations at the same time as I was having, agreed to part with the parents and stayed alone in our native place. By the sacrifice, he helped me a lot
* My Grandfather - from the beginning itself encouraged me to get the State First Rank - which also helped me
* My Aunts being teachers had major role in shaping me by teaching and encouraging. My uncle, a PG Assistant (Chemistry) took me special classes and gave guidelines regarding examinations. Another uncle helped me by collecting and supplying me study materials whenever I required them urgently.

13. How did you learn about your achieving the state rank in the examinations? What was your reaction when you first heard it?
I learnt about my achieving the State Rank through a news reporter when I was proceeding to the school for seeing result. I felt very happy. But I was slightly dissatisfied when I heard that I missed the State First Rank by 1 mark.

14. Did you have any time to play any sport, pursue any hobby during your preparation for the public examination?
I had no time for sports and hobbies at hostel during my preparation for the public examination.

Moreover, in the situation where all the people surrounding us are seriously studying the thought of sports and hobbies wont arise.

15. Your life must have changed after achieving the state rank. You must be busy receiving lot of congratulatory messages, awards, recognitions etc. Could you tell your experience since the results were released?
* Thanks to media. All of a sudden, my face has become familiar to many people especially in my native place. I have gained exposure and publicity
* I received wishes from even unknown faces
* I feel self satisfied that I have fulfilled the expectations of my parents and other well-wishers
* Awards like cash award and TN governemnt free education received by me boost up my mind to find way for my successive achievements.

16. Are there any special people you would like to thank for your achievement?
No such special people can be mentioned. All had equal role.

17. Tell us about your family.
(1) Father: Dr.V.Selvaraj MBBS, Dch., Age: 48, Paediatrician Civil Surgeon, working in GH (Periakulam), Gold Medallist in PUC
(2) Mother: Dr.V.Indumathi MBBS, Age: 42, working in GPHC (Vadapudupatti), top ranker in school days
(3) Brother: S. Moghanavel Vasanth, promoted to 9th standard, a consistent first rank holder
(4) Grand Father: S.A. Veluchamy, who created and nurtured this beautiful family, eventhough he came from a poor family.

18. What course have you chosen to pursue after your twelfth standard?
M.B.B.S.

19. Finally, what is your advise to the students who would be taking their public examinations shortly?
* Be hopeful and determined
* Always have optimistic attitude
* Always aim high and fix your target
* Analyse and realise your minus points and search ways for overcoming them
* Never give weightage to cricism. Just ignore them
* Give due respect to teachers
