1. Congratulations on getting the state rank in the HSC examinations. Was it a surprise when it came or were you expecting it any way?
It was something which I, my family, relatives, teachers and friends expected. Since I had got State 2nd even in my 10th standard, it was booster dose to me and so putting in the right amount of work and planning appropriately helped me to achieve this.

2. Many schools and students start their preparation for the twelfth standard examinations while in the 11th standard itself. When did you start your preparations for the 12th standard public examinations?
My preparations for the public exams started only in the 12th standard. Our teachers are well trained and experts in their own subjects. Only if the 11th standard basics are strong, 12th standard would be easier. So the teachers planned accordingly and started the portions at the right time, gave us enough series of tests and exams, monitored our progress and completed them cool and calm. After that we had a series of revision exams too, which helped us shine well in the board exams.

3. Was the teaching and materials provided by the school sufficient for your preparations or did you take any special coaching for any of the subjects?
The teaching and the materials provided by the schol were more than enough for the board preparations. There wasn't any necessity to go for any tuitions outside. It would be a waste of time and energy. It would be better to concentrate well in school.

4. For how many hours per day did you study?
Apart from school, 5-6 hours would be ideal. But more than the quantity, the quality of time (spent) is important.

5. How was your typical school working day like? How would you allot time for each of your work?
The teachers made our school work interesting and less burdensome. It is better to plan the day's work in the morning and allocate time for each subject and always keep in touch with it.

6. How was your typical school holiday (weekend etc) like? How would you allot time for each of your work?
If I could not complete any work during the weekdays, I would compensate that in the weekend. Moreover compiling the week's work and revising them would be useful. It's better to allocate time even for games (outdoor) and extra-curriculars to keep our mind fresh.

7. Did you approach preparation for each of the subject (Language, English, Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Biology/Computer Science) differently or was your approach the same to each of the subject?
It is important to prepare a strategy for every subject and plan well before the board examinations. That would be helpful to get more marks.

8. If your approach to each of the subjects were different, how did you approach the preparation for -
a. Language Paper

  • Paraphrasing and dividing the answer into appropriate paragraphs would give a better appearance
  • Writing extra quotations between the answers would also impress the teacher
  • Writing neatly and avoiding striking of answers is advisable
  • Using blue and black ink would give a neat look
b. English Paper

  • Neat handwriting and avoiding striking of answers
  • Using extra quotations and proverbs
  • Writing a synopsis before the detailed answer would fetch more marks
  • Giving adequate space between the answers and avoiding congestion
  • Reading the newspaper everyday would improve the vocabulary
c. Physics Paper

  • Writing the formulae in a separate notebook and revising them periodically
  • Practising diagrams until perfection
  • Reading thoroughly for one words
  • In the exam paper, writing the formulae and equations in black ink would be better
d. Chemistry Paper

  • Writing and practising the equations
  • Practising diagrams
  • Allocating time for practicals
  • Practising problems
  • Careful in choosing questions
e. Mathematics Paper

  • Working out all the text book sums including the worked examples
  • Working out the text book objectives and also the guide given by the Parents and Teachers Association
f. Biology paper

  • writing the answers in points
  • Practising diagrams
  • Noting down the key words

9. How important are handwriting and learning to write speedily in the examinations? Is there anything that a student can do to improve these two aspects?
Pracising to write would increase the speed and also give confidence. This would help us write neatly in the board and impress the teacher and fetch more marks.

10. Are there any strict Do’s and Don’ts that you would recommend a student preparing for his or her twelfth standard examinations to adhere to?
  • Not to omit any portions
  • While learning the first time, learn it with full concentration and thoroughly
  • Noting down the important points and key words
  • Writing an answer more than once should be strictly avoided in the answer paper
  • Clearing the doubts instantaneously from the teachers without postponing
  • Understanding the subject clearly and thoroughly
11. How did you prepare for your entrance examinations? How was it different from your preparation for the public examinations? When did you begin your entrance exam preparations? Is there any institute or material that you would recommend for this?
Only if we learn for the board examinations thoroughly, entrance exams would be easier. It cannot be done just within the month's period after the boards. As the entrance exams consist only of objectives, thoroughness of the subjet is more important and omission of any particular chapter could be dangerous as there is no choice. So the entrance preparations must go side by side with the board preparations.

12. Did your school identify you as a prospective state rank holder early and give any special attention and coaching? How important is the choice of a school in achieving high marks in the examinations?
Yes. Right from the beginning I used to get the first rank and so the teachers always used to encourage me and support in every possible aspect. They were the guiding stars in the crucial 2 years. Only if the teachers infuse interest in the student, he/she would be able to perform better. So the school plays a very important role in a student's career.

13. What was the role of your parents and family in your preparations for your public examinations?
Right from my young age, my parents were the first teachers and they were the ones who always inspired and supported me and were with me through all my ups and downs. They advised me to learn well always as education is the only wealth which comes with us throughout our life. My family members too opined the same. My parents also cut the TV connection in my 11th and 12th standards for my welfare and sacrificed 2 years for me to avoid diversions.

14. How did you learn about your achieving the state rank in the examinations? What was your reaction when you first heard it?
I first heard the news from my school principal. I was extremely happy on hearing that as I was able to repeat the achievement which I had been able to do in my 10th standard.

15. Did you have any time to play any sport, pursue any hobby during your preparation for the public examination?
Recreation is always important in our course of study. Always staying wide awake with the books would not bring out our efficiency. In between, we have to refresh our mind and play some sport or have some useful hobby of our interest. I used to play football and shuttle at school and home. I also used to play the keyboard when I am stressed out to be fresh.

16. Your life must have changed after achieving the state rank. You must be busy receiving lot of congratulatory messages, awards, recognitions etc. Could you tell your experience since the results were released?
For the first two days after the results were released, I was busy receiving telephone calls. There were also a lot of awards and prizes. Among them, the most valuable is the one I received from the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru M.Karunanidhi. I was also given the certificate for free higher education by him. There were awards given by many private organisations like Sri Sivakumar Educational and Charitable Trust. I feel happy for achieving what I want and (in the process) making my family, teachers and friends feel proud.

17. Are there any special people you would like to thank for your achievement?
First and foremost, I would like to thank my parents for bringing me up in the right manner, joining the right school and help me achieve what I wanted to. I would also like to thank my teachers for their helping hands, relatives and friends and wellwishers for their encouragement and support. I would be failing in my duty if I dont thank the Almighty, for His blessings without which all these would not have been possible.

18. Tell us about your family.
My father - Dr.T.S. Chandrasekar - is a doctor, specialised in Gastroenterology (M.D., D.M.) and the Chairman of MedIndia Hospitals, Chennai and Coimbatore. He was a 13 gold medallist in his M.B.B.S. and best outgoing student from Madurai Medical College and PGI, Chandigarh. My mother - Mrs.T.C. Sharmila - is a B.Sc Graduate (Zoology) and looks after the administration of the hospitals. My sister - Ms.T.C. Rashmica - is in 9th standard in D.A.V. Girls Higher Secondary School, Gopalapuram, Chennai

19. What course have you chosen to pursue after your twelfth standard?
I have chosen to pursue M.B.B.S. course at the Madras Medical College

20. Finally, what is your advise to the students who would be taking their public examinations shortly?
The students should first have the fire and burning desire within them to achieve. They should identify their interests and work incessantly in the right manner, avoiding all the diversions atleast for these 2 crucial years. They should always have the self-confidence and should not be let down by the low marks if they get in any particular examination. Planning perfectly and working it out would make anybody be at the top of the list.
